In 1962 Ansei Ueshiro Arrived in New York City representing the Honbu Dojo and Master Nagamine to begin Matsubayashi-ryu Instruction in the USA...All Kata was taught including Ueshiro's own Fyukyu-gata-sandan and Jim Wax Oyo Tan Ren Exersize ...Soon a large number of dojo expanded into an open organization that did not necessarily conform to Okinawa guidelines.
The most critical was Kumite Instruction and Tournament Participation. Many American became highly recognized for this activity including Bob Yarnall, Jim Harrison, Bill Marsch and many others. Okinawa wanted more control over kata instruction and ranking of black belt grades. Recent American who had returned from Okinawa were instructed to advise American black belts that Heavy Kumite and Open Tournament Competition would not be acceptable.
In 1969 Okinawa Master Nagamine and Omine were to arrive and re-organize USA activity...what they found was a split amongst the teachers and dojo owners.
Resolution of this problem was addressed by leaving Chokotu Omine 6th Dan Renshi as Head of North America...leaving Ueshiro, Ota, Morita, Kwai Wong, Heshiki sensei the opportunity to join or get out...Many American senior ranks also separated and established their own working organization or joined other established groups as the USKA-Phoenix and other local entity.
